Bitter cold, slicing wind

Something has happened to me, slowly and almost imperceptibly. The football season is over, the kids are working hard at school and the winter has set in with a vengeance. The wind is a killer, literally. We are waking up to dead rabbits in the fields and dead birds near the house, looking for warmth.
Today, it is 1°. That's it. 1.
I thought we were on the downside of winter. The temps were in the forty degree range and the bulbs were blooming in the yards.
Now this.
It feels terrible. After being gone so long, I forgot how stinging this wind can be. How unforgiving. How grey and depressing.
It seems silly to have your mood follow the weather, doesn't it? I have spent hours today, looking out the window, trying to find a reason to get going. I am not going to find inspiration in the yard. It's just sad to see the little grey goldfinches land on the feeder and fly away, fearing the hawks that have taken up residence. We don't have any birds, any more. Just hawks.
Well, I know one thing. I don't like hawks and I don't like winter.

GREY WINTER

Winter Trees

by William Carlos Williams

All the complicated details
of the attiring and
the disattiring are completed!
A liquid moon
moves gently among
the long branches.
Thus having prepared their buds
against a sure winter
the wise trees
stand sleeping in the cold.

  1. I'm with you, Sissy. I don't like it either. If you are a person who likes to get out of the house everyday, then I can see how the cold weather would make you depressed. I get by because I enjoy being stuck inside to do my quilting/sewing.

I hope you find a different job that you like better. It's the pits to have to go to a job you don't like. It's probably a combinatin of the yuky weather and the job that's making you feel down in the dumps. I hope you feel better soon.

  2. I think the winter/January blahs are affecting a bunch of us...being stuck in the house because of the snow and cold really gets to me at times. If I can get through Jan. & Feb. then I'm ok...is it Spring yet???? Hugs xoxo

  3. This time of year I dream of moving south, I start to hate my job and I'm just miserable in general. Winter got off to a late start and I hope it ends early! I have no idea how to discourage the hawks :-(

  4. January can be a very long, depressing month and if the weather is bad it makes it far worse - take extra care and look after yourself - spring is just around the corner:)
