Rescuing the Boxed Flowers....

I read this post over at Carol's May Dream's Garden .
She had the fantastic idea to rescue the Boxes of Amaryllis. So, I got in my car and went to the Walmart and look!!

I had never had the interest to grow these before. In Memphis, I gardened year-round. Very few days would be too cold to do something in the yard. But, it's a different story for me, now. So, I looked for amaryllis....

and narcissus.
It came with this:

21/2 cups of water later, I got this.

My Narcissus. Aren't they cute?!

My Amaryllis 'Minerva'. Poor Minerva. She's crooked.

Another thing Carol does is the Garden Blogger's Book Club. I really want to do it, but maybe the book for January looks more academic than I can handle. My garden books are sooo silly, compared to what the others are reading....
You would never guess that I am a Master Gardener, in Shelby County, TN. I spent many long hours at the Memphis Botanic Garden plant sales, just hoping they would give the extras away for the volunteers. I helped dig out an orchard and helped plant the Green Giants around the iris bed.
But gardening here is different. Too much wind, too much cold. I am out of my element. Plus, I am starting from scratch. Again.
I did get the Castor Bean seeds I ordered from Diane's Seeds. She also threw in some free cornflower. That was nice, considering my order didn't even add up to $5.00!!

  2. Hello Sissy,
I came over from Carol's May Dreams, where you mentioned that you recently bought the My Favorite Plant book.
Mine was on order, and today I get an email saying, "Sorry!, you're out of luck." [At least they refunded my money.] May I ask where you got your copy?

  4. No, Sissy - I'm so far behind, I didn't even get December yet. Thanks for the answer.

I've done both amaryllis and the Paperwhite narcissus in other years but have none in progress at the moment. Our kids used to make a little ceremony at dinner time, measuring how much the amaryllis stalk had grown in the previous 24 hours.

    Sissy,
You will have such fun with the paperwhites and Amaryllis. Thanks for joining the rescue efforts. That one you pictured looks like it can use some sun.

And for January, if you don't want to read the book, which by the way isn't that academic, write about anything you read about soil or compost.
