Ribs and Bugs

On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon, we met with several thousand of our friends to throw a party.
sliders, jalapeno popper dip, melon, ranch dip and chips

Spoils to the victors!
this is a new cut of meat to me, perhaps you make it?
country ribs are worth trying, I promise.
Where have they been all my life!?

A beneficial pal!

Ok, so they say he's beneficial, I think the jury's still out on this one, but it is too creepy looking for me to get very close!
Manits facts: The head rotates and swivels, so it can look over its shoulder. Most insects do not have this ability. Thank goodness.
The mantis changes color to suit its environment, waits for potential prey to come to it, then grabs it with serrated forelegs that work like a vice.
The mantis then bites the head off its victim. Sheesh.
Most folks think this guy is a great guy to have around. The problem with this guy is...he eats everybody. Good and bad. Sure, he'll eat aphids and caterpillars, but he also eats ladybugs and spiders. So, he is a giver and a taker. This guy is here for the grasshoppers, I suspect, so he can stay!

After being gone all day yesterday, we have a sleepy Bears Sunday in store.
After going all out yesterday for the tailgate, I might make a soup or stew, today.
I hope your Sunday is spent the way you want it and of course,
GO BEARS!!

  2. The food sounds good. I love a good barbeque! The Praying mantis I have no shortage of in my garden. I like them but I have to keep relocating them off the Hummingbird feeders.
    Enjoy the Bears Game!

  3. Oh Sissy, that country rib picture is to die for! Looks simply delicious....but a little messy for me for a tailgate party. WHAT a GREAT day for a football game ~ and they won which rounds out the day! All orange and blue yesterday and more of the same today. GO BEARS!

  6. Country spare ribs are delicious! I make them a couple of times a year.

    Go Bears!

Our Detroit Tigers are having a great season. I am a fair-weather fan--only watching the big games.

  7. My husband bought a praying mantis egg case a few years back. Hundreds hatched in a jar in our kitchen. I liked having them around...creepy, yes, but fun to watch!

  8. I was at the party, too! I was the one wearing the orange sweatshirt:) Wasn't it a great game? Wish I'd napped during the Bears game, though:)

Two years ago I had so many mantises around here that I must have posted a photo of one every week. They look like something alien or prehistoric, but I've gotten fascinated by them.
